Carey Researcher Tours Mister Rogers Neighborhood

Main navigation Johns Hopkins Legacy Online packages Faculty Directory Experiential learning Career assets Alumni mentoring program Util Nav CTA CTA Breadcrumb Carey Researcher Tours Mister Rogers' Neighborhood People still love to visit Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Never thoughts that manufacturing of the lengthy-working PBS program for younger viewers ended in 2001 and that its creator and guiding spirit, Fred Rogers, died in 2003. How else to clarify the recent surge of curiosity in the man and his present, which are the subjects of a new characteristic documentary in theaters, as well as documentaries which have lately appeared on PBS and streaming video. That’s not all: A function film starring Tom Hanks as Fred Rogers is planned for launch in late 2019. Alexandra Klaren, an assistant professor at the Carey Business School, is a lifelong fan of the program. While a graduate scholar in Pittsburgh, the place the show was produced, Klaren wrote her doctoral dissertation on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Last fall in Dallas, her study “Becoming Dialogical: An Inquiry into the Communication Ethics Origins of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” received the top-paper award in the communic ations ethics division at the 103rd annual convention of the National Communication Association. In this Q&A, Klaren (proper) describes her analysis, the parallels between her personal areas of study and those of Fred Rogers, and a few of her favourite moments from the show, amongst other Rogers-related matters. Q: Can you describe the central theme and findings of your analysis on Fred Rogers and the show? ALEXANDRA KLAREN: My analysis of the present partly explains the uniqueness of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood not as a child’s leisure program for passing the time but as a relational, dialogical, and pedagogical visit with a caring adult who encourages the kid viewer to think about the world and reflect on her function in it. I show how the program fulfilled a necessity for deep, important, relational encounters of learning rather than serving, as other programming for youngsters did, as a distraction from the world and self. More broadly, I supply a rhetorical and cultural ana lysis of the manufacturing, success, and impact of MRN. I locate its emergence in the Nineteen Sixties by way of the rise of the television in American family life, and the desire by Fred Rogers to make use of TV to inspire healthy early youngster development and to develop a ministry that may use the new medium as a web site for ethical engagement and discourse with children and their households. I present that Rogers made a pedagogical, values-based intervention into the then-new medium of TV, where he aimed to counter a children’s TV panorama characterized by chaotic and degrading depictions of human habits. And he did this by interweaving his research in baby psychology (which included observing and interacting with children) with a Christian understanding of the human particular person. The examine additionally analyzes audience reception of the program through an examination and analysis of viewer/fan mail. I argue that Rogers is dedicated to partaking his viewers in a deepl y interpersonal form of dialogue that recognizes their shared humanity and affirms individual identities and their improvement. Why did you choose this as a analysis subject? Growing up in the 1980s and 90s, I often felt that I was immersed in a number of and competing value propositions and messaging via numerous establishments (e.g., school, family, media, church). Thus, I wrestled with questions about our culture and its values. “How can a plural culture be cohesive with multiple worth methods at work within it?” I wondered. “How should we act on the earth, and in accordance with which moral systems?” As a millennial, I was fascinated by the ability and affect of mass media productions on the beliefs and attitudes of my friends. So my analysis inside the field of communication has targeted on questions of ethics and social institutions, especially the mass media, in contemporary society. Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, I think, struggles with tackling the identical issues of tips on how to create an ethical sensibility and an ethical understanding of tips on how to be and act on the earth without explicitly speaking in a single worth systems’ phrases. You earned each your MA and your PhD at the University of Pittsburgh, right in Fred Rogers’s neighborhood, so to talk. What function, if any, did your being in Pittsburgh play in your alternative of the subject? I was on the lookout for a dissertation matter according to my interests within the intersection of American contemporary tradition, media, and ethics. Because I lived and went to graduate faculty in the heart of Pittsburgh, whose public television station WQED served as the house of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood for round 30 years, I heard that a middle dedicated to Rogers’s legacy that included an archive of the program was in the strategy of being constructed. I beloved this system as a baby rising up in Northern Virginia and recall the power of the relational parts between me and Roger s feeling so sturdy that I requested my mom to pen a letter to him from me. I bear in mind well the second when she known as to me in the house to notify me that a letter from the Neighborhood had arrived. I opened it up to see a carefully typed observe on Neighborhood stationary signed by “Mister Rogers” himself. It additionally included a black and white, 8x10 photograph of “King Friday,” whose kingly apparel I had asked about in my letter. During my analysis, I came upon that Rogers personally replied to every letter obtained at his WQED studio offices. Given the latest documentaries and the deliberate movie with Tom Hanks, how do you account for this surging curiosity in Fred Rogers and his TV show? Is it mainly nostalgia among adults who grew up watching the show, or does it go deeper than that? I do suppose that in this second of uncertainty and polarization, our culture is crying out for a noble, reasoned, authentic, and unifying voice like that of Fred Rogers. So in this regard, an examination of this man who meant so much to multiple generations of Americans across the board and who introduced people together in a spirit of celebration of the value of the person and his unique price, of the promotion of the civic and ethical good, and that included an on a regular basis reminder of the significance of moral interpersonal relations within the larger context of a neighborhood group, does seem very much in order. Do you plan additional examinations of Rogers and his work in your analysis? If so, are you able to say what which may entail? I do hope to increase my research on Fred Rogers and his work by engaging in a examine of his viewers in the type of oral history interviews. Your MA is in non secular research and your PhD is in communication. That somewhat echoes the background and training of Fred Rogers himself, who was an ordained a Christian minister and a grasp communicator. Would you reflect on how his sense of spirituality and religiosit y affected his work on TV? Yes, I present how the Neighborhood has a non secular supply in Protestant Christianity and that the present functions as a sort of Christian ministry regardless of the shortage of particular references to religion. The show, somewhat, focuses on the ordinary events of on a regular basis life â€" such as baking a cake, tying one’s footwear, visiting a neighbor â€" and how these are moments for understanding tips on how to behave in relation with the world and others. Fred Rogers seen the usually violent and debauched, quick-paced, commercial-pushed well-liked media prevalent on TV in the 1960s and aimed to create something radically totally different. In distinction, his show provided ethically-pushed, dialogue-wealthy substance, which communicated a deep concern for the emotional wellbeing and growth of viewers. In a 1997 speech to the Memphis Theological Seminary, Rogers stated that he got here to comprehend that acknowledging the ache he felt on accou nt of bullying was critical to his personal healing and development. “Somehow along the way in which,” he mentioned, “I caught the belief that God cares, too; that the divine presence cares for those of us who are hurting and that His presence is everywhere.” Although Rogers, in his public persona, didn't often emphasize his religion in God very much, his life and philosophy and creative production was led by his belief in a caring and merciful divinity. “I all the time pray,” he noted, “that via whatever we produce (whatever we are saying and do), some word that's heard might in the end be God’s word. That is my major concern. All the others are minor compared to that.” As a longtime fan ofMister Rogers’ Neighborhood, would you share any of your favorite moments from the present? I liked the time on this system devoted to what felt like “me and Mister Rogers” time. The present is damaged up between the area and time involving the parasocial relationship betw een the viewer and Rogers â€" this takes place in Rogers’s residence, and typically he'll take his “tv good friend” on a go to to an area business or neighbor’s home or factory â€" and then the realm of fantasy play, where animal puppets and human actors interact in a more dreamlike area called “the Neighborhood of Make Believe.” One of my favorite episodes, and apparently a very popular one among the higher public, includes a visit to a crayon factory, where we see every step of the method of the making of crayons and the mass packaging of them into the cardboard bins we purchase on the drug store. In all his visits outdoors his “television house,” Rogers positioned the employees, craftsmen, salesmen, etc., at middle stage. In my dissertation, I write about how in his personal personal writings and within the craft of his show, Rogers emphasizes a people-centered, anthropocentric method to communication, understanding, and everyday life. Five easy ways to be more successful by listening

Five simple approaches to be increasingly effective by tuning in Five simple approaches to be increasingly effective by tuning in Tuning in to other people and consciously including your own info is a key to progress at work. On the off chance that you don't set aside the effort to hear out those you work with, you chance estranging yourself from the group and missing out on all the keen thoughts you could be teaming up with them on - on the grounds that your thoughts, your voice, and your own anxiety with how you show up is making them remain silent. Here's the means by which to turn out to be progressively mindful of the messages you conceivably send others when yours is regularly the main voice heard in the room.Listen to yourself firstOne of the hardest pieces of being a decent audience is figuring out how to quiet down and let another person have the floor. It's similar ly as terrible in case you're in a discussion and you're simply sitting tight for another person to get done with talking so you can bounce in again - to coordinate the discussion back to yourself. In case you're in a discussion or a gathering and each announcement you make begins with I, at that point you're not tuning in: You're communicating. What's more, when you're in gatherings or gatherings, begin monitoring how regularly every individual talks. Is it accurate to say that you are the predominant voice in the room, however not running the gathering? At that point everybody is got notification from you way too much. This takes mindfulness, which doesn't come effectively to everybody; it's anything but difficult to get into a section or begin to look all starry eyed at our own thoughts in light of the fact that, all things considered, they are our own, and to advocate them to the finishes of the earth. That's fine, in the event that you need to go that course, however it cuts us o ff from others. These inquiries tenderly test old presumptions, yet do as such in a valuable way. Staying there quietly gesturing doesn't give sure proof that an individual is tuning in, however posing a decent inquiry tells the speaker the audience has heard information disclosed, yet that they fathomed it alright to need extra information. Good listening was reliably observed as a two-way discourse, as opposed to a single direction 'speaker versus listener' association. The best discussions were active. So don't simply dispatch words at individuals: ensure you're understanding what they think.Don't be hesitant to call yourself outBecoming a superior audience is a procedure, and it very well may be difficult work. The odds are that in the event that you go down the course of attempting to be a superior audience, individuals will bolster you. Be that as it may, even the best audience members here and there fall away from the faith into not so much focusing on what individuals are saying.Paul Donoghue, therapist and co-creator of Would you say you are Really Listening? Keys to Successful Communication with Mary Siegel, told U.S. News World Report about what to state when you end up slipping go into your old ways.Even in case you're mid-sentence, get yourself. 'Here I go once more, offering guidance', he told he site.Check out their place of viewA discussion is, at its root, a route for at least two individuals to share data. In case you're the just one talking, you're not learning. To make more grounded associations with individuals, put forth an attempt to comprehend who you're speaking with.Paul Sacco, Ph.D., an associate teacher at the University of Maryland School of Social Work educated HuffPost concerning how to identify with the individual opposite you. It's as basic as placing yourself in their shoes.Spend a second imagining their perspective, what's experiencing their head and what it must rese mble for them… Understanding what their experience is even before you converse with them [can assist you with interfacing with them]. What's more, it sounds awful, yet regardless of whether you blow it, you're despite everything happier in light of the fact that the other individual will see the endeavor, Sacco told the publication. There are explicit methods you can use to show you're attempting to see another person's perspective. One great alternative: rehash what they said and inquire as to whether you comprehend it effectively. You just said you're troubled where you are. I'm hearing that you'd prefer to proceed onward to something different. Is that right?Put your listening aptitudes to the testIf taking up discussions with generally your info is a propensity for yours, you should give this a try.A Forbes article includes a listening abilities work out that expects you to sum up what you simply heard. It's a decent method to ensure you're truly listening. For in any event mult i week, toward the finish of each discussion where data is traded, close with a synopsis explanation. In discussions that bring about understandings about future commitments or exercises, summing up won't just guarantee exact finish, it will feel totally normal. In discussions that do exclude understandings, if summing up feels off-kilter simply clarify that you are doing it as an activity, the article says.Being a superior audience will show others that your consideration about their thoughts and commitments - at work, socially, or at home. Missed #SHRM13 Blogging4Jobs Official yet Unofficial Recap! - Workology

Missed #SHRM13 Blogging4Jobs Official yet Unofficial Recap! - Workology Missed #SHRM13? Blogging4Jobs Official yet Unofficial Recap! In case you missed our #SHRM13 Recap Day One, you can read more about it and the keynote that everyone was dying to see, Hillary Clinton. Missed #SHRM13? Blogging4Jobs Official yet Unofficial Recap! Another year has gone by where HR ladies (and gentlemen) have flocked to the annual conference for the Society of Human Resource Management. We saw keynote speakers from Blake Mycoskie, co-founder of TOMS, to Mark Kelly Gabby Giffords, and the ever-so-popular Hillary Clinton, former Secretary of State. With all these exciting speakers coming to Chicago it was impossible not to be overwhelmed by session after session. Monday Recap Monday afternoon was filled with random flash pizza parties (thanks to TalentCirlces for sponsoring) and sessions that would amaze anyone in the industry. My favorite Monday session was over the neuroscience behind growing talent. The speaker, David Rock, spoke over different types of mindsets and attitudes we have in the workplace that play a huge role in not only retention, but the growth of companies. Be sure to stay tuned to Blogging4Jobs in the coming weeks as we deliver several topics over this one session. It’ll take that much and more to fully appreciate the entire session. On Monday night DJ Jazzy Jeff took the stage at the official SHRM Glassdoor party to deliver a performance that had everyone sloshing drinks and having a great time. The party was thrown at the House of Blues in Chicago, IL and everyone that was anyone in HR was throwing it back to the 80s style rapping disc spinning.  As a millennial, I drank and watched all the HR ladies as they let go and danced like it was 1983. Tuesday Recap After a crazy night of partying (to see more follow the hashtag #crazyshrm on Instagram Twitter) day three of SHRM for me personally was filled with sessions encompassing HR legislation and other legal matters. The first session I attended was from the Vice President of Government Affairs for SHRM, Michael P. Aitken,  who spoke on upcoming legislation and the overall impact it had on the Human Resources industry. His main focus was immigration reform that is a major topic in the 113th Congress. The other favorite session I attended was over gender identify in the workplace and the battles won and lost over creating a workplace full of equality. These are heavy topics and we will be blogging about them in the near future. Tuesday night was amazing. Started off by the Blogger Party in the Dice/Open Web Bloggers lounge then followed by the one and only Kelly Clarkson. The concert was beyond amazing. Her most known songs, Breakaway, Stronger, Mr. Know it All, among a few new songs were sung and I had a blast. If you want some video on it, just ask and I’ll send them your way! For a quick taste follow this link to see her new song which debuted yesterday. Wednesday Recap Wednesday was less crazy as the other days of SHRM. Everything was winding down, but before most jumped in a cab they stopped by to see Mark Kelly Gabby Giffords  for the last keynote of the conference. After delivering a powerful and inspiration speech those who went to it left energized with a sense of the “I can do anything” spirit. After that session I made my way up into an area of the McCormick Convention Center I had never gone to see Eric Mosley, CEO of Globoforce, give a fantastic speech over crowdsourcing the performance review. He spoke on the many levels of performance reviews in the workplace and how each review impacted the growth and retention rate of your employees. A happy workplace fosters an attitude of productivity. Soon after his session I left for Midway International Airport to make my way back home to Denver, CO. Now I am sitting on the plane writing this recap for everyone who wasn’t able to attend. If you haven’t been to a SHRM or didn’t come this year, start saving up because next year will blow your mind! We had fun! Did you? Feel free to let us know your favorite conference session or activity in the comments! See you next year for #SHRM14 in Orlando, FL June 22-25, 2014.

Engineering Renewable Energy for Haiti

Building Renewable Energy for Haiti Building Renewable Energy for Haiti Building Renewable Energy for Haiti Indeed, even before they graduate, building understudies at Georgia Tech have begun to bring genuinely necessary, reasonable, and solid sun powered capacity to a little remote town of around 6,000 in Haiti, crushed by the 2010 tremor. Understudies state ventures like these are not just incredible learning encounters, they are likewise exceptionally fulfilling, as they probably am aware they are helping make people groups lives better notwithstanding causing themselves to feel like genuine rehearsing engineers. The town, called Thoman, a three-hour drive east of Port-au-Prince, is being created as a maintainable network by a Mississippi-based charitable service. The individuals despite everything live in crude lodging and have no power or running water. Just a year ago did Thoman get associated with Haitis primary force matrix, yet administration is untrustworthy to the point that an as of late opened wellbeing community depends for the most part on a diesel generator that is costly to work. Everyday environments are poor to such an extent that one colleague, Edlawit (Julie) Bezabih, initially from Ethiopia, stated, Haiti is extraordinary. I had never experienced [conditions] like I found in Haiti. I am from Ethiopia, clearly from Africa, so the greater part of these things are not new for me. ORS Team in Atlanta (from left): Elizabeth Robelo, Julie Bezabih, Wondewosen Kihinet, Liyao Wu, Kyron Longwood. Picture: Georgia Tech Reestablishing Power Two autonomous groups created frameworks that are making life somewhat simpler. One group of 23 understudies, drove by Frank Lambert, chief examination engineer at Georgia Techs National Electric Energy Testing, Research, Applications Center, created and introduced a half and half miniaturized scale framework in the wellbeing community, which currently gives all day, every day power. The framework incorporates a 7.2-kW photovoltaic cluster and a battery bank to supplant the diesel generator in ordinary tasks. The group picked this framework over other force creating units subsequent to assessing alternatives, in light of specialized and monetary models, for example, day by day vitality creation and most extreme yearly limit deficiency, just as convenience and capacity to get substitution segments when required. The other, littler group of five understudies, guided by Ph.D. guide Liyao Wu, created and introduced a littler sunlight based controlled framework that gives LED light, swapping lamp fuel lights for single family houses and telephone charging with the goal that inhabitants dont need to make a trip miles to discover a force source. At the point when this group began its venture a year prior, they realized their work was bound for Haiti in the long run yet had no clue about when, so they didnt hope to see the conclusive outcomes. A while later when they learned they would go to Haiti the following spring to do the establishment themselves, that gave them considerably more motivation to plan the absolute best undertaking for the Haitian individuals, Bezabih says. The group went through the initial a while finding out about force hardware circuits, doing recreations, and discussing various plans. By February, they had a framework they thought would work, comprising of a controller board that interfaced with the sunlight based rooftop boards to charge LED lights and telephones by means of USB ports. At that point testing started. One of the main issues the group confronted was a circuit board that smothered around early afternoon when radiation and voltage are extremely high. Under the direction of Wu, the group utilized a voltage controller to bring it down so the circuit board worked consummately. ORS Team inside the subsequent house they've fueled, with the proprietor and her girl. Picture: Georgia Tech Significantly greater difficulties emerged after they showed up in Thoman. They didn't know early what kind of houses they would be chipping away at, and the group acknowledged it needed to make another mount for the sun powered boards to be situated for greatest sun introduction. The establishment unit they brought wasnt helpful, and they discovered that solitary two colleagues were sufficiently light to take a shot at the feeble housetops. We needed to penetrate and do everything ourselves, Bezabih says. At the point when they required direction and investigating, they called for help from somebody on the social insurance community group, who had past experience introducing sun oriented boards. That first establishment took two days, the subsequent one, just five or six hours. Streamlining Design Despite the fact that what occurs next isn't set at this point, Wu is prepared to hand off the undertaking to another alumni understudy to work with the following group since he will concentrate on his Ph.D proposition, and most, if not all, of the other colleagues are graduating. Be that as it may, Wu has spread out thoughts for what could come straightaway. The plan isn't yet improved, Wu says. What we have is a working model that gives capacity to the client, yet the board is huge and cumbersome. We should be capable by increasingly cautious plan to contract the size and make it lighter and still give the equivalent or better presentation. The framework as of now is charged through a force bank during the day, however he might want to see a battery consolidated with the goal that it will naturally get charged during the day. We werent ready to do that before in view of time limitations, he says. An additional advantage that the specialists expectation can happen is that the groups can show the Haitians how to assemble and introduce the frameworks themselves, giving genuinely necessary business openings where none exist today. Wu trusts one day he can return to ventures that offer assistance to individuals out of luck. Our undertaking helped two families, and there are hundreds there, he says. I trust that more can be introduced in more homes and that they can be progressively practical, for mobile phones and lighting as well as to control increasingly complex capacities; perhaps siphon water and different things they need power to do. They have an exceptionally long approach. Nancy S. Giges is an autonomous essayist. Find out about the most recent vitality arrangements at ASMEsPower Energy Conference and Exhibition. Our undertaking helped two families, and there are hundreds there. I trust that more can be introduced in more homes and that they can be more functional.Liyao Wu, Ph.D. understudy, Georgia Tech

How to Deal With Sexual Harassment At Work

Instructions to Deal With Sexual Harassment At Work The discharge throughout the few days of the HBO film Confirmation, delineating Anita Hill's inappropriate behavior guarantee against Supreme Court Justice candidate Clarence Thomas, will probably provoke another round of conversation on lewd behavior in the working environment. Inappropriate behavior is characterized by the EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) as unwanted lewd gestures, demands for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical badgering of a sexual sort. In the event that you believe you're being bugged, make these five strides: Express your protests plainly I once went to an organization offsite complete with trust falls and other physical gathering exercises. At a certain point, with co-ed bunches moving over one another in one more endurance game, one of the male associates offered a realistic comment about the ladies contacting the men. I and another female partner made some noise immediately, That is not clever. After the activity, he was sorry. From that point on, he kept his equivalent ill-mannered silliness however after work hours and not with his female associates. The circumstance may not resolve as neatly as mine did however your response should be that unmistakable. Try not to make a joke. Try not to remain quiet. Try not to get distraught â€" you need to diffuse the circumstance, not raise it. A nonpartisan voice is adequate. This additionally goes for individuals who witness provocation â€" you can and should tell the wrongdoer the comments or activities are unwanted. Record the undesirable movement In the event that you express your complaint and the provocation proceeds, keep on expressing your protests yet in addition archive the points of interest â€" date, time, place, subtleties of what the guilty party did, your reaction, the wrongdoer's response, and who else was available who may have seen what occurred. You need to have this data accessible for other people, you will bring in to help you since you previously attempted to fix the circumstance all alone and that isn't working. You can and ought to find support. Counsel supportive outcasts Start with your emotionally supportive network outside the organization. Counsel a tutor or companion in HR, and offer the reported subtleties. They may have extra techniques to attempt before raising the circumstance. I have a companion who is a business legal counselor. At whatever point I have a customer who's in any event, pondering heightening a segregation or provocation case or who's pondering about non-contends or other work contract issues, I show it to my legal counselor companion, not for authentic lawful guidance, yet for a layman agreeable clarification of the issues. Do you have a comparative asset you can tap? Counsel supportive insiders You additionally need to search for help inside the organization. Have you seen badgering of others? Are these associates ready to join your exertion? Possibly a case has just been opened, and you can loan your help to that. What does your organization strategy manage state about how to report badgering? Regularly, HR is the initial step to put forth an official defense, yet you might need to begin the discourse with the wrongdoer's chief. Start an official case In the event that you don't have the foggiest idea about the guilty party's chief or aren't open to managing that individual, at that point start with HR. Your HR contact should open an examination which will incorporate addressing the guilty party, that individual's chief and other potential observers to the wrongdoer's conduct. Once more, your reported subtleties will prove to be useful here, so you truly need to have all the movement caught. Recall that these means are useful for a wide range of provocation, not simply lewd behavior. Keep in mind that you are included regardless of whether you are not the guilty party or the hassled: If you see awful conduct, you should get it out. On the off chance that you are the administrator of somebody who is bugged or somebody blamed for culpable, you have to make a move promptlyâ€"tune in with a receptive outlook to the two records, report as much as could be expected under the circumstances, and enroll HR support. At long last, recollect that a decent litmus test for whether conduct is inadmissible is whether it makes someone else awkward. In the event that, subsequent to watching Confirmation, you are enticed to revive the discussion on Clarence Thomas v. Anita Hill in your own working environment, individuals may discover the theme excessively touchy or excessively disputable and in this manner awkward. Spare your film audits and soapbox remarks for after work.
