That one when Joey appsong for a job.Revise your resume well before submitting it. Or even better, ask your partner or a friend to do thefact checking for you. Theres usually plenty of reality twisting and you definitely want to filter these things out before applying for a job.In one of the episodes of Friends, Phoebe bombards Joey with questions related to his resume. Apparently none of it is true. No tap dancing, archery or horseback ridin g. But to drink a gallon of milk in just 10 seconds- that he can do4. Degrees from the University of Life dont really count. Its pure folly to lie about doing military tafelgeschirr or having a college degree, especially when youre applying for a prestigious position. However, there are still some people- such as one of Trumps advisors- who believed they could get away with it. But at the end of the day, an honest apology will be the first thing youll need to do.Faking your academic achievements will make your career sink right away. So why would you ruin it before it has even started?5. Cant do something? Dont act like you can. This adventurous Venezulean athletehas probably never seen snow in his life. Even Cedric Dig gory had to lie about his education. To get his role as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter, the actor Robert Pattinson deceived the casting directorsby saying he attended Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. In fact, hed been unemployed for a long stretch of time.Explaining a gap in your employment might get tricky at times, but lying can never be a solution. Try to emphasise the benefits you reaped from the time when you could focus on the career change.7. Expert horse rider? Olympic fencer? Please.List your real hobbies. People are still gonna check.Do not attempt to embellish your academic credentials. Vice President in the Obama administration, J oe Biden, had to abandon his presidential bid. It was discovered he lied about graduating in the top half of his class in law school. Too bad9. You cant judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree.Think twice about your area of expertise. Its absurd to claim youre an accomplished alpine ski racer when you actually excel in gymnastics. Watch the aspiring French skier Julien Lizeroux showcase his extraordinary skillsbefore he even touches the snow.To avoid making your career somersault, list the most important skills first and proceed to more marginal ones towards the end of the list. Recruiters will read your resume from the top to bottom, not the other way round.10. Is the job you have to lie to get really worth it?Focus on larger goals. Small-scale steps are important, but getting stuck on them will lead to nowhere. To elucidate this point, just have a look at this insanely bad freestyle skier Elizabeth Swaney, the halfpipe sensation of 2018 Winter Olympics.Swaney worked towards th e single-minded goal of making it to the Games. If your only objective is to get to a specific job position or pay rise, you might miss out on far more important features such as simply being good at what you do.Keep your feet on the ground.Learn from the mistakes of others and dont let half-truths and little lies enter your resume.Whether you are a fresh graduate or senior staff member, its high time to do away with fabrication andexaggeration.Sincerity is the safest path to credibility.Build up your career step by step, work on your skills and the results will come along the way.If youre just out of college, check outour ultimate guide to an irresistible college student resume. It will help you get your resume into shape in no timeShare Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments

How to Get Your First Job in the Creative IndustryHow to Get Your First Job in the Creative IndustryGraduating soon? While its an exciting time - no more late-night study sessions or subpar cafeteria food - the post-college employment search can feel daunting. But do not fear. Heres how to get your first job in the creative industry. Its a big, professional world out there, and there is no shortage of job opportunities for recent or soon-to-be college graduates looking to enter the creative field. At the same time, getting your foot in the proverbial door can be challenging if you dont know how to sell yourself to hiring managers. So, what matters most to employers today? In a survey by The Creative Group, advertising and marketing executives said they distributionspolitik the most weight on a candidates interview performance when hiring entry-level creative professionals. Resume ranked second and previous experience came in third. (See our infographic of the research below.)Fortunat ely, you can prepare for meetings with hiring managers - whether in person or via phone or video - and get that much closer to landing an offer. And you would be wise to Executives said they conduct three rounds of interviews, on average, with top creative candidates. Here are some tips on attracting the attention of employers5 ways to get your first job1. Cast a wide net when networking. Start spreading the word about your job search both online and off. Youve no doubt heard it before, but who you know can be the key to landing your first job. Talk to friends, family, college professors, alumni members, neighbors - even the parents of your friends. Take advantage of professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, and join industry associations and groups relevant to your field. Request informational interviews with people in flecks that you aspire to have one day. Briefly explain your qualifications and be specific about the kind of creative job you want. If you dont ask (in a pr ofessional way), you dont get - and you may be pleasantly surprised by others willingness to help.SEARCH OUR OPEN JOBS2. Perfect your application materials. Nearly three-quarters of advertising and marketing executives surveyed by The Creative Group said they prefer to receive traditional resumes - that is, stimmt or PDF documents - from candidates applying for creative roles. The best resumes and cover letters are easy to read and highlight specific skills and achievements related to the open position. Research each employer so that you can customize effectively. Try to track down the name of the hiring manager so you can further personalize your pitch. Also, make sure that every piece of written communication, including thank-you notes, is error free.3. Only show your absolute best creative work. Polish and (potentially prune) your portfolio. Some recent graduates make the mistake of trying to show employers their range by including far too many samples in their portfolio. Stic k to sharing your very best work - eight to 12 items is generally good. If youre not sure about a particular piece, leave it out. For more tips, check out our post on how to put together your first professional portfolio.4. Do your homework before interviews. Peruse the company website and ask people in your network what they know about the position and company culture. If you know who youll be interviewing with, review the persons LinkedIn profile. Prepare to answer the most common interview questions. If youll be presenting your portfolio, practice with friends and family before the meeting. You need to be able to effectively articulate your role in and the results of each project.5. Be prepared to prove your technical proficiency. Employers know its not uncommon for job candidates to exaggerate on their resumes - and in-person assessments are one way they can validate applicants claims. In fact, 17 percent of executives surveyed by The Creative Group said they always include sk ills testing as part of their hiring process for creative roles another 36 percent said they sometimes do. So dont be caught off-guard if youre asked to complete a test to prove you have it takes to do the job.

Getting Started in Portfolio Management
Getting Started in Portfolio ManagementGetting Started in Portfolio ManagementThis stelle varies among the firms in the industry, and the role itself differs depending on which segment of the firm you work in mutual fund, institutional or high-net-worth. For instance, high-net-worth portfolio assistants spend more time working with clients, while institutional assistants spend more time monitoring and analyzing portfolios. Regardless, the general assignment focuses on supporting the portfolio manager. Portfolio manager assistants are often instrumental in the process of screening for potential investments. Using the general strategy of the investment product such as market-capitalization, earnings growth, valuation multiples or industry the assistant screens all available stocks in the market (about 10,000) to identify the smaller list that meets the portfolios criteria. The screened list for an active portfolio varies, but typically ranges between 100 and 300 securities. Portf olio manager assistants then gather additional research for the portfolio manager to begin the process of fundamentally analyzing the potential investment. Once investments are made, portfolio manager assistants are responsible for monitoring the reconciliation of the trades. In this role, they work with the operations staff to assure that the portfolio is properly updated and performance records are accurate. Most firms have separate operations departments that reconcile trades and produce monthly client reports. However, many of the smaller firms require their portfolio assistants to perform the operations function as well. You should be aware of this, and clarify the exact job responsibilities when applying and interviewing for the job.Portfolio assistants also participate in the process of client service, although the proportion of time spent in this area depends on the type of client being served. For instance, an assistant to a mutual fund portfolio manager would spend v ery little time on client service. Institutional and high-net-worth portfolio managers have fewer clients and they meet with them once or twice a year. Intermittently, their clients require vast and detailed investment reports and market commentaries. While marketing helps prepare these formal presentations, the portfolio manager assistant plays a crucial role in collecting economic and market data for the investment commentary and portfolio analysis sections of the report. The position requires a person who understands capital markets, is capable of meeting deadlines and enjoys working on multiple projects simultaneously. The downside is that the reporting and operational components of the job have a quick learning curve and then become repetitive. Furthermore, it is not the best place to learn how to really value companies. Rather, you are being exposed to the years of experience that the portfolio manager possesses. Most important, portfolio manager assistants receive the b enefit of seeing a broad picture of investing money across several industries, whereas research assistants typically get exposure to one component or sector. All in all, in the right setting, the position is a great introduction to the industry and a worthwhile apprenticeship to pursue. Best Soft Skills to Boost Your Career
Best Soft Skills to Boost Your CareerBest Soft Skills to Boost Your CareerMost occupations require that those who work in it have certain abilities that allow them to do their jobs. For example, photographers must understand how different camera settings and lighting affect the pictures they take, teachers must be able to use certain techniques to teach math and reading, and computer programmers need to know how to use programming languages. These abilities are known as hard or technical skills and to learn them one usually enrolls in some sort of educational program where he or she receives classroom instruction and often practical training as well. They are much less tangible than hard or technical s kills, and unlike them, you do notlage learn soft skills by enrolling in a training program. You can, however, acquire them through educational, work and life experiences but it will take a concerted effort on your part. Lets say, for example, you are terrible at managing your time but find yourself enrolled in a class that requires you to complete numerous projects. If you want to do well you will have to improve your time management skills in order to meet your deadlines. An important thing to note is that soft skills are transferable between occupations. While you may have to go back to school to learn new technical skills if you change careers, you can always take your soft skills with you since they are valued in a variety of fields. In addition to what is required by your occupation, employers also expect you to have certain character traits. Just look at any job announcement and you will see a laundry list of qualifications that includes not only the technical skills you need to do the job but qualities like excellent communication skills, strong organizational skill, team player, and strong listening ability listed there as well. Even if you have the technical skills required for a job if you cant demonstrate that you have the specified traits you probably wont get the job. 5 Reasons Employee Referrals are the Best Source of Hire - Spark Hire
5 Reasons Employee Referrals are the Best Source of Hire - Spark HireAs recruiters, we can look fondly upon the times when a department could put out a job ad in a magazine or a newspaper and stacks of ideal resumes just seemed to fly onto our desks. All you had to do was interview a handful of promising candidates and select the right one to be loyal and stay at your company for quite some time. Until you wake up and face the real world hiring the right people is time-consuming and costly enough. Dont let bad hires cost you even more.Companies are continuously seeking effective recruiting sources in a time characterized by talent shortage and demographic changes. Small businesses especially find themselves with increased difficulties in identifying cost-effective sources of hire.Employee referrals can be the fruchtwein useful way to find the best candidates for your company. Many studies have revealed that employee referrals are the most successful source of hire. There are many rea sons why your employees should become your new recruiters but we nailed down the most illuminating ones for you. Keep reading for the five things that make referrals the best source of hire.1 The hard factsA recent study reveals 3 out of 7 referrals are successful. 73% of the companies who have a referral program confirm that the overall cost-per-hire is significantly lower than any other recruiting source. 67% of recruiters stated that the recruiting process was shorter than any other source of hire. Numbers dont lierecruiters utilizing referrals are empirically more successful and more efficient in hiring talent.2 The insider informationBefore the candidate is referred to the company, he or she is provided with extensive information about the job, the team and the company. Clearly understanding the job requirements and the work environment allows the candidate to make a more thorough decision. This will not only lead to a higher satisfaction of the candidate, it will also lead to a higher retention rate.3 The qualityThe candidate referred to the company presents a much higher quality inherently because he or she was pre-screened by the referrer (at no cost to you). In fact, most referred candidates are passively engaged in the job market and are not actively looking for new employment at the time the referral is made, so youre getting unique access to top talent.4 The element of trustAn employee wouldnt just recommend anybody. There is an element of trust that guides the entire referral process and guarantees that the reputation of the referrer will not be damaged. The candidate trusts that he or she is being referred to a worthwhile opportunity, and you can trust that the candidate is worth pursuing.5 The emotional connectionThrough pre-screening and the assessing about prospective fit, an emotional connection is established even before the actual referral is made. Through the referrer, the candidate immediately creates a bond with the company and establish es loyalty to his/her (hopefully) future employer. There is no reason a company should not take advantage of their employees networks. Quite frankly, there are many advantages for employees as well when hiring someone out of their trusted network. Who wouldnt like to build their own team? What was your experience with employee referrals and do you encourage your employees to refer?
